Baby Body Hair Removal | Lanugo | Natural Ways To Remove Baby's Body Hair | Get Rid of Unwanted Hair from Baby's Body

Get rid of those unwanted hair from your newborn's body with some amazing and effective natural home remedies.

You must have noticed some newborns having long thick hair all over their bodies. This body hair is called the Lanugo. It’s true that nothing will stop you from believing that your baby is the most beautiful child in the world. But , seeing them covered with those hairs can be really distressing. Let me share my own experience.

When I delivered my baby on March 29th, 2019, I still remember everyone including the doctors mentioning about how much hair she had on her tiny little head. I was really happy and proud as I knew she had inherited it from me!

But what gave me a shock was something which I saw the next day while changing her clothes. She didn’t just have those thick hair on her head but her body too. At that moment I had only one thing in my mind… Oh god! How am I going to get rid of these?

And from the day we started giving her a proper bath, I followed some natural home remedies which I had learned from my research and also from some of the elders in my family. It takes some patience but literally helps in removing the unwanted hair from her body.

Trust me, these remedies and tips are genuinely effective and have really shown me some amazing results!

What is lanugo?

Lanugo is present in all babies while they are in their mother's womb. It’s said that this acts as a protection towards the fluid in the amniotic sac. Though it usually falls off before birth, in some cases it sticks around until the baby is born or even for a few weeks or months after birth. Premature babies are the ones who tend to have hair on their bodies.

Body hair for a newborn is not something to worry about. Most babies have it and it sheds off after some time. It is usually present on their back, shoulders, forehead, face. Both girl and boy babies can have this condition.

Things To Remember While Treating Your Baby's Body Hair -

  • Never try to pluck it or shave it off. I know you won’t do such stupid things but still just for awareness.

  • Always be gentle on your baby’s skin. They have very sensitive skin hence extra care and nourishment are important.

  • Go with your baby’s skin type and condition. If he/she has very dry or sensitive skin and is developing some redness while using any of the remedies, stop it immediately.

  • Be patient. No treatments will show instant results. They need time to fall off completely. Hence continue what works for your baby until you get the desired results.

Natural Home Remedies to Get Rid of Your Baby's Unwanted Body Hair

The best and safest option is to go with natural home remedies. Chances of having any reaction to these natural ingredients are very less. But still, I would recommend doing a patch test before using it on your baby.

In case he/she develops any allergies, stop using it immediately. With that note, let’s get into the treatments.

1) Give a good oil massage

Oil massages are not only good to keep your baby’s skin nourished but also to help in shedding off those unwanted hairs. The heat produced while massaging can trigger this process. Hence make sure to give him/her a regular oil massage before bath.

2) Massage with wheat dough -

Whole wheat flour is rich in vitamin E while gram flour and turmeric help in enhancing the complexion. Coconut/almond oil nourishes the skin and soothes the rubbing process.

3) Bitter Gourd Leaves & Coconut Milk Mixture -

This is an old grandma remedy. You might be aware of this if you have any elders in your house.

The key ingredient is the Bitter gourd leaves which may not be easily available in some areas.

If your baby is allergic to turmeric you can skip it and go with just the other two ingredients.

Malai from milk helps in giving a radiant and glowing skin. On the other hand, the bread acts as a gentle scrubber for removing those body hair.

Other methods for baby's above 1 and a half-year-old

Once your baby turns 1.5 years old, you can start trying out other remedies if they still have body hair. Some of them are as follows.

  1. Ubtan pack- Prepare a mixture of 1 tbsp gram flour, pinch of turmeric, and 2 -3 tsp raw milk. Apply it on your baby's body and let it sit for 304 mins. Wet their body and gently start scrubbing in a circular motion. Finally, rinse off with lukewarm or normal water. Repeat it 2 times a week.

  2. Mix Chandan (sandalwood) powder and a pinch of turmeric with raw milk, and apply it on the body parts that have the hair. Rub the paste gently on your baby’s skin. Rinse off with lukewarm water. You can do this 2-3 times a week depending on your child's skin type.

Will the hair regrow?

There are chances for some to re-develop the hair when they grow up. It can be some hormonal issues or sometimes congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), indicating a lack of certain enzymes

At this point, you need to consult with your doctor as they can be your best guide.

As I always say, every child is different. Hence choose a remedy that works best for their skin type. If nothing works, then it’s totally fine. All babies are beautiful in their own way. Never disgrace them for their flaws.
