As a Keralite, Onam, and Vishu are very special for me, especially the so-called Onam Sadhya. The list of items or dishes you can include in this platter is never-ending.
Though I love all the dishes, few of them are my top favorites. So, today we will be preparing one such recipe which tops my list. It’s called Kalan.
Kalan is a very popular traditional Keralite dish made of yogurt, coconut, and vegetable tuber-like yam and raw plantain. It is the ultimate comfort food and goes best with some rice and any spicy vegetable stir fry on the side. Usually Kalan recipe Kerala style is prepared with Chena /ElephantYam and Pachakkaya /Raw Plantain. You can use both ingredients together or anyone depending on your preference. Here I will be using both of them together.
So without any further ado let’s get started.

How To Prepare Kerala Style Kalan Recipe
Preparation of Kalan Dish -
Peel the skin of raw banana and cut it into medium-sized cubes. Similarly cut the cleaned elephant yam.
Now take an earthen pot ( you can also use a stainless steel Kadai) and add all the diced veggies to it.
Next, add ½ tsp turmeric and pepper powder. Also, add ¼ tsp red chili powder and ½ tsp salt.
Then add 1 cup water, mix all the ingredients together, and switch on the flame.
Close the lid and let it cook for 15 mins on medium flame. Stir occasionally.
While it cooks, take a blender and add grated coconut, green chilies, and 1 tsp cumin powder. You can also add cumin seeds instead of cumin powder.
Blend it first without adding water. Once partially grated, add ¼ cup of water and blend until it forms a very smooth paste.
After 15 minutes, open the lid of the pot and give a good stir. Check if the pieces are cooked well.
Next, add the blended mixture well and again close the lid for 1-2 mins so that the mixture is cooked.
After 2 mins, give a good mix and then add the curd and mix well. Let it boil for a min and then switch off the flame.
Now for preparing tadka, take a Kadai and add 1 tbsp coconut oil.
Once the oil is hot add 1 tsp mustard seeds and let it pop. Then add some curry leaves, 2-3 dry red chilies, and a pinch of turmeric.
Give a quick mix and add the tadka to the dish prepared in the earthen pot.
Immediately close the lid and let it sit for 5 minutes without mixing the tadka.
Finally, after 5 mins, give a good mix and the Kalan is ready to be served hot with rice and other dishes.
