24 Life Saving Cleaning Hacks You Must Know To Save More Time & Energy

Cleaning is one such household chores that require a lot of time and effort. The frequency of cleaning completely depends on your lifestyle and sometimes on your personal choice. Some may prefer it to do all by themselves while others would go for a maid to execute the cleaning.


But what if your maid falls sick or rather something else happens like the COVID 19 lockdown? You would be trapped, isn't it? Handling all the cleaning and other household chores along with your office work can really be difficult. You, of course, don't want to spend hours tackling the inevitable dust and grime while leaving behind other important tasks, Right?


So, here are some of the quick and ingenious life-saving cleaning hacks to save time, money, and of course, sanity. And the best part is you just need 3-4 common items which you will definitely have on hand rather than any fancy cleaning products for performing most of the cleaning tasks.



#Tip 1 : Let the ceiling fans stay cleaner -


Cleaning the ceiling fans of your rooms can be a monotonous task. The dust accumulated over there would spread around your whole room thus making your cleaning task more difficult. Here is a quick hack to this problem.


Take a pillowcase and slide in over each fan blade individually. Now press the case with your hands from top to bottom and pull it toward you along the blade. All the dust present will be collected inside the pillowcase. Repeat it for all blades after tossing away the gathered dust into the dustbin. Finally, put the pillowcase for a wash ! Isn’t that incredible??



#Tip 2 : Tackle a Stinky Garbage Disposal Bin -


Firstly, make sure you use an eco-friendly biodegradable plastic bags within your garbage bin. This helps you to easily clean out the waste and your bin. Never ever dump food wastes, especially greasy wet ones directly into the disposal bins. This will give you a stinky and dirty bin.



Now to tackle this problem place a newspaper at the bottom of your bin and then add 3 tbsp of baking soda over it. Now use a trash bag inside the bin to collect all your junk.


While cleaning the garbage bin after disposing of the trash, remove the newspaper and simply spray some vinegar on to the inner areas and scrub off all the junk from the bins.




#Tip 3 : Clean the Blender-


If you try to clean a blender with your hands or a cloth, then you may still notice some leftovers inside it. To clean your blender perfectly, fill half of it with warm water, and add 2-3 drops of dish soap to it. Now turn it on and blend for 30 secs. Finally, rinse it out with warm water.



#Tip 4 : Clean Your Sponge -


It’s really important to clean your cleaning sponge . A lot of bacteria gets accumulated in these sponges.



There are two ways to clean them -

  1. If you have a microwave, simply place a wet sponge in it and microwave for 30 secs. Take out the sponge when it partially cools. The heat in the microwave kills all the bacteria.

  2. If you do not have a microwave, bring 2 cups of water to boil. The water should be very hot. Turn the flame off and add 2 tbsp vinegar and baking soda to it. Now immerse the sponge into this mixture. Let it sit for 5-7 mins. Take out the sponge and finally wash it with some dish liquid in warm water.


Clean your sponges either way at least 2 times a week.



#Tip 5 : Clean all drawings from the wall -


Is your child trying to become an artist day by day by coloring or drawing on your beautiful white wall? Please you need not stop their passion instead try out this remedy to get a clean wall as before.



Take a bowl. Squeeze out some while Colgate ( preferably, you can use any toothpaste) into a glass bowl. Now add 1 tsp vinegar and 1 tsp liquid dish soap. Mix them well and take some amount on a toothbrush and start scrubbing it over the marks on the wall. Once you complete a section wipe off using a wet towel. Do this process to all the affected areas until you get a clean looking wall.


Note - After brushing, you need to wipe it off immediately when its wet else the marks won't go completely.


#Tip 6 : Unblock Air Vents -


Air vents get pretty dirty and dusty. This may obstruct the air from flowing in and out. To clean this you can use a microfiber cloth wrapped around a knife and then soak it in cleaning detergent before using it for the removal of dusty junk from the air vents.


You can also use a soft vacuum brush for the same.



#Tip 7 : Get those Shiny & clean sinks and taps instantly -


It’s common to have gunk getting gathered between the corners of the sink and tap.



To remove them, cut a half lemon and use it to scrub off the corners of the tap and sink. Rinse it off with some water. Finally, wipe with a cloth dipped in vinegar to give your sink and taps a new shiny look.



#Tip 8 : Clean Stainless Steel Appliances


We all have stainless steel appliances in our house. Fingerprints and water stains tend to decorate the surfaces of refrigerators, ovens, etc. Keeping them clean and shiny will now be super easy by this small trick.


Take a rag, put 2-3 drops of dish soap, and then dampen it with some water. Now wipe along the grain of your appliance. Then take another clean, dry rag and wipe off the water streaks. Finally, take some olive or baby oil onto the cloth and start polishing to get that clean shiny looking stainless steel appliance.



#Tip 9 : Clean showerhead -


Are you facing low water pressure from your shower? One of the reasons can be soap scum and mineral buildup.


To resolve this problem take a plastic bag and fill it with vinegar. Now soak the showerhead by placing the bag over it. Use a rubber band and the neck portion of the shower to hold in place.



#Tip 10 : Clean Your Couch With Baking Soda


If your couch has stains or lingering smell, then you need to try this out. First, brush off the surface of the couch and then sprinkle some baking soda on the areas you want to clean. Let it sit for 25-30 mins. Vacuum up the residue to get a clean looking couch.



#Tip 11 : Clean Glasses With Vinegar


Use a soft paper towel/newspaper and add some vinegar to it. Wipe over gently to get rid of the cloudy look from glasses.



#Tip 12 : Use Toothpaste to Clean Sneakers


Fed up of cleaning dirty sneakers ?? Apply toothpaste directly on your sneakers and start scrubbing it with a toothbrush. Let it sit for 2-3 mins and then wash off with some cleaning liquid. You can continue scrubbing while rinsing it off to remove all dirt.



Tip - To get rid of smelly/unpleasant odor from your sneakers, sprinkle some baking soda inside it. Baking soda absorbs all the odor.

Make sure you do this on dry sneakers.



#Tip 13 : No more Burnt Pan


It’s rare to see any house without at least one burnt pan. Who knew that we could get rid of those simply by using household items.


Fill the burnt pan with water and add 1 cup of vinegar. Boil it fully and then switch off the flame. Now add 2 tsp of baking soda and let it sit for 2-3 mins. Once almost cool, use a half cut lemon and start scrubbing the burnt portion to remove the junk. Now use a metal scupper and some liquid soap and scrub it thoroughly to get a clean new looking pan.



#Tip 14 : Remove hair from clogging your drains


Hair loss in common and so the clogging of your bathroom drains. I came across this amazing trick from Youtube to remove all the clogged hair completely without any efforts.

#Tip 15 : Unclog the Drain


We all face this issue in our homes especially in our kitchen sink and bathroom drains. Here is a quick and easy solution without any costs!


Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the drain. Let it sit for 5-10 mins. Now pour 1 cup of vinegar to it. Leave it for another 5-10 mins. Then pour hot boiling water down the drain and finally run tap water to wash off any leftover gunk.


Prevention is better than cure right? Hence always try to prevent your drain from clogging with food or some other unwanted waste. For this, you can use a drain filter for your sink.





#Tip 16 : Cleaning the Microwave


It’s always messy to clean the microwave. But this hack is going to be a savior. All you need to do is take a microwave-safe bowl and add equal amounts of water and vinegar.


Then drop in a toothpick to the bowl to prevent any dangers. Now set it on high for 5 - 10 mins. Let it cool. Take a wet microfiber cloth/sponge and wipe down the dirt and residues smoothly. Is n’t it simple??



#Tip 17 : Get that weird smell out of your bath towels


Towels should always be cleaned and washed regularly. But sometimes though we wash them thoroughly it still may have some weird odor. To get rid of these -

  1. Soak all the towels in warm water and add 1-2 tbsp of baking soda. Let it sit for 10-15 min and then put it in the washing machine to clean the towels thoroughly. Let it dry completely.

  2. You can even add 1 cup of vinegar and 1 tbsp of baking soda to the clothes after placing them in the machine. Now run the wash cycle at the highest temperature. Dry out the towel completely after washing.



#Tip 18 : Clean makeup brushes


If you are a makeup lover like me then you will need to regularly clean up all your makeup brushes and sponges.


Instead of investing in expensive cleaners, try out this simple hack to achieve the same desired results.


  1. Take a bowl and add some micellar water to it. Now dip in your brushes and gently scrub it over a makeup cleaner pad. Do similarly for your sponges.

  2. Now fill the bowl with some warm water and add some baby shampoo to it.

  3. Immerse all your brushes and sponges in it for 4-5 mins.

  4. Then once again start scrubbing the brushes gently over the makeup cleaner pad.

  5. For sponges squeeze out the water and repeat until the water comes out clean.

  6. Rise all of them once again and pat dry using a towel.

  7. Leave it to air dry completely.

Investing in a good long-lasting makeup brush cleaner pad is very beneficial. I personally use the below-mentioned one.




#Tip 19 : Get a new looking cast iron pan ingeniously


Cast iron pans can be really hard to clean. For this, first Sprinkle a generous amount of salt. Cut the potato into half and place it, flat side down, onto the pan and scrub pretty vigorously in a circular motion. You can even give a final scrub with a metal scrubber to remove all the residue. Once the pan is clean, rinse with water and pat dry.

You can also pour 2-3 drops of oil and spread it around the inner side of the skillet to create a smooth nonstick surface.

#Tip 19 : Clean your stove and burner pans


Gas stove and burns tend to get greasy and dirt very fast. But cleaning those can be a potent task.



Here is a quick and super easy inexpensive remedy -


  1. Gas burner - Soak the gas burners in an equal amount of water and vinegar for about 15-20 mins. They scrub off the junk using a brush or metallic scrubber.

  2. Gar stove / Gas top - One method is to spread a generous amount of toothpaste ( white toothpaste preferably) over the grime and let it sit for 1 min. Now start scrubbing using toothpaste until all the dirt comes out. Wipe and clean with a damp cloth.

  3. Another method is to prepare a thick paste of baking soda , water, and 1 tsp of vinegar. Coat all the surrounding of the stove with paste and let it sit for 20-25 mins. Scrub the softened residue with a brush or scrubber and clean them thoroughly using a damp cloth.



To wipe off the excess junk use a soft sponge and some dish liquid and start sponging. Finally, you can rinse off with water or clean dry cloth.


You can also try out the mini wire brush cleaning tools to scrub off the junk from burners and stove. They are super cheap and last pretty long.





# Tip 22 : Un-scratch your plates


If your plate gets some scratches then to get rid of those sprinkle some baking powder and let it sit for 10 mins. Then wipe with a damp cloth and rinse. Baking soda helps in the fading of the marks.



# Tip 23 : Reuse those old vests


The old vests can be the best cleaning rags, especially for your kitchen. Instead of throwing the old and torn vests, cut them into towel shapes and use for cleaning the countertops, ovens, washed utensils, etc.



#Tip 24 : No More messy pet hair cleaning


If you are a pet lover but find it difficult to get rid of the pen hair here is the savior! Use a rubber glove to clean up those from your body as well as surroundings. These rubber gloves can also be used in other cleaning processes like sink cleaning, countertop cleaning, etc.
